I want to thank everyone in FSCA leadership for their hard work and dedication. You truly are making a difference. Here’s the latest information I’d like to pass along:
FWC staff have added a temporary campsite along Stumpers at the M-O Canal (formerly known as Old Camp N). FWC is now calling it “Campground X.” This site helps make up for Camp A, and possibly Camp B, being unavailable this season.. Staff hopes to have Camp B open by General Gun season, but that’s not guaranteed. The good news is that roadwork is reportedly moving along steadily. Fingers crossed.
Additionally, FWC staff provided an update today regarding the JW Corbett camping and vehicle proposals. They plan to launch a public commenting tool later in August to gather broad feedback on these and other hunting/WMA proposals. Before that, they wanted to share a brief overview of the direction they’re currently considering for JW Corbett.
J.W. Corbett WMA – allow camping until seven days after the close of general gun season to provide campers more time to remove their equipment. Note: You must remove camping equipment within 24 hours after the close of general gun season.
J.W. Corbett WMA – allow individuals participating in the 9-day dog training season to operate street-legal vehicles, side-by-sides, and swamp buggies on Stumper’s Grade and numbered trails and to operate swamp buggies off-road and off-trail in the portion of the area lying south and east of Stumper’s Grade. Note: Currently, hunters may not use motorized vehicles during this season (except on Stumper’s Grade), which makes it difficult to access most of the area provided for dog training.
J.W. Corbett WMA – prohibit the use of street-legal vehicles off-road and off-trail year-round. Note: Currently, street-legal vehicles may be operated off-trail and off-road by hunters during muzzleloading gun, general gun, and small game seasons. However, this allowance is not widely viewed as a traditionally important use and commonly leads to stuck vehicles, resulting in habitat damage and safety concerns.
J.W. Corbett WMA – prohibit the use of swamp buggies and side-by-sides off-road and off-trail, except during the general gun season in the portion of the area where deer-dog and hog-dog hunting are allowed. Note: This proposal is intended to address habitat damage caused by the use of motorized vehicles off-road/off-trail, and would remove this type of access from muzzleloading gun and small game seasons.
